The Importance of Failure
I can relate to Bella M. when she wrote about failing in her article The Importance of Failure. Bella said"..I failed one of my classes sophomore year." In her article. And I can relate to the author here because I also experienced the failure sophomore year. Failing is important because, in life you'll fail in something from time to time, thats how life is. Thank you Bella for taking the time to read the letter of response to your article. The Importance of Failure By the time I had finished my sophomore year, I had failed 11 classes. I finished freshman year with a 1.0 GPA. My guidance counselor had told my mother that at the rate I was going, I wouldnââ¬â¢t be accepted to any state school. Now, youââ¬â¢re probably either thinking ââ¬Å"Oh my God! What was wrong with you?â⬠or ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s nothing. You could have done way worse.â⬠And yes, while I could have done worse, I also could have done much better. Yet somehow, during this time of failure, I miraculously learned how to never feel like one. People donââ¬â¢t fail because theyââ¬â¢re stupid, inadequate, or incompetent. While this is the message that is constantly being perpetuated, it isnââ¬â¢t even close to true. People fail because theyââ¬â¢re not ready. The classes that I once had less than 50 percent in taught me more about myself than any class I did well in. I needed to fail. Prior to failing, I was obsessed with exceeding and woul d tear myself apart when I didnââ¬â¢t. In short, I felt most like a failure when I was succeeding. At a constant rate of achieving success, my ego built up rapidly, teaching me that any mistake was unacceptable. The first time I got a B, I came home and made a list of 100 things I needed to do to be better. When failing in school, our first reaction is to criticize ourselves, our habits, and the way we think, when in reality, these have nothing to do with it. This year, I am retaking seven classes. I find it incredibly interesting that the things that once went right over my head, I am now thoroughly digesting and gaining interest in. Because Iââ¬â¢m older, I am now ready to take on certain things that I wasnââ¬â¢t able to in the past. And I have learned that this is completely okay. I go to a school where 80 percent of juniors take at least one International Baccalaureate class, most are engaged in extracurriculars, and they still have time for a social life. Itâ⠬â¢s easy to feel inferior in this environment. However, how do we know whether those students are happy with their lives and the constant cycle of being busy? The fact is, their lives have nothing to do with mine. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter if youââ¬â¢re currently retaking a class full of freshmen as a senior. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter if youââ¬â¢ve had to retake the same class more than once. We must stop looking for opportunities to compare ourselves to others. Doing this will allow us to succeed as growing individuals. The moment we truly succeed is when we are ready to. Learning how to fail and how to process failure is the most important thing I have taken from my education, and for that I am incredibly grateful. In a system where failing is looked upon as the worst possible thing you can do, it is extremely important to learn that itââ¬â¢s okay. By failing, you ultimately learn how to become the best version of yourself.

Structural and Textural Irony Essay - 999 Words
Literary elements such as metaphors, similes, alliteration, the use of personification, and the use of irony are primary tools and building blocks for great literature. With the incorporation of literary elements, an insignificant story of occurrences can be transformed into a literary work of art presenting depth and purpose to its audience. While many short stories are flooded with a number of various literary elements, Zora Neale Hurstons Sweat, William Sydney Porters The Last Leaf, Guy de Maupassants The Necklace, and Nathaniel Hawthorns The Birthmark are prime examples of short stories that are built around the distinct element of irony. Irony is emphasized throughout these four short stories to draw the reader into theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦William Sydney Porter also throws a premature textural irony at the reader in the sixth paragraph of his short story The Last Leaf. Has she anything on her mind? asks the doctor in regard to Johnsys lack of desire to fight off pneumo nia. When Sue answers the doctor, his reply is Paint? - bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking about twice..., thus indicating that painting couldnt possibly be of any importance to anyone. The emphasis of this textual irony is slowly revealed as the subject of painting becomes more and more referred to throughout the story. This textual irony also leads the reader further into the story by establishing a reoccurring theme that intrigues the audience. Eventually it becomes apparent that painting is the sole reason that Johnsy is able to stay alive, therefore the act of painting encompasses more importance than the initial credit afforded to it by the doctor. This is an excellent example of textual irony rather than structural irony because the irony that lies within the theme of painting is very subtle and not necessarily plot driven; painting is just a minor detail as to how the older man saves the girl. Showing that i know how to work out ratios and why there needed Essay
Essays on Showing that i know how to work out ratios and why there needed Essay MacDonaldââ¬â¢s Ratio Analysis The financial analysis of a company is best done using financial ratios that are used to describe the performance of a company (Neely, 2002). Financial ratios are usually divided into several groups, but the best indicators of a firmââ¬â¢s performance are the profitability ratios and the pyramid of ratios (Neely, 2002). The best ratios that can be used to describe the performance of a company include the current and quick ratio and all the ratios that are included in the pyramid of ratios. These ratios are the Return on Capital employed, the Return on Investment, the Leverage, Asset turnover, Asset leverage and the net margin ratio. The relationship between these ratios can be seen on the diagram below (Graham, 2010): 1. Return on Capital employed (ROCE) The return on capital employed measures the return that a business gets from the amount of money invested in it, meaning that it is a measure used by investors to rate the business (Graham, 2010). The return on capital employed is calculated as Net income after tax divided by the Total Equity, which, for MacDonaldââ¬â¢s is displayed below. ROCE = NIAT/Equity = $5,503,100,000/$32,989,900,000 =0.167 2. Leverage The return on capital employed is a ratio made up of two other ratios, the leverage and the Return on Investment (ROI) (Neely, 2002). The leverage is a ratio used to measure the amount of owner money invested in the business as a ratio of the amount of debt that the business incurred for running the business. The leverage ratio is important in determining the relative stake that the owners have in the business, and for MacDonaldââ¬â¢s, is given as: Leverage = Total Capital / Equity = $14,390,200,000 / $18,599,700,000 =0.77 Leverage is an important ratio for the business since it improves the availability for the company to use, but too much leverage can be detrimental especially if the market is risky. In the case of MacDonaldââ¬â¢s, the leverage is not more than 1, meaning that the company is sufficiently leveraged. 3. Return on Investment (ROI) The return on investment (ROI) measures the efficiency of the business in utilizing invested capital to earn a return for the stakeholders in the business (Graham, 2010). The ROI is a ratio given by dividing the net income after tax by the capital invested in the business. = $5,503,100,000/$14,390,200,000 = 3.824 This ratio is used to measure the underlying performance of the business, which is displayed by how the company utilizes invested equity to return profits. The final ratios used in the pyramid of ratios are in the third tier, and include the asset turnover ratio, the asset leverage ratio and the net margin. These three ratios, when combined, give the ratios in the second hierarchy of the ratios, which are the ROI and the leverage. In turn, the ROI and leverage give the highest ratio in the hierarchy, which is the ROCE. 4. Asset Turnover Ratio The asset turnover ratio is used as an indicator of how quickly the business is running or how the company works the assets in the business (Neely, 2002). The asset turnover ratio is given as the division of the turnover and the total assets. For MacDonaldââ¬â¢s, the ratio is given as: Turnover/Total Assets = $27,006,000,000/$32,989,900,000 = 0.818 5. Asset Leverage Ratio This ratio measures the way the asset base is leveraged against the equity in the business, and is given as the total assets divided by the total equity in the business (Graham, 2010). For MacDonaldââ¬â¢s, this is given as: Total assets/ equity = $32,989,900,000/ $18,599,700,000 = 1.77 This ratio indicates that the company has more asset leverage that the equity, which is a plus for the business. 6. Net Margin This ratio measures the profitability of the business as a percentage of the turnover, which is a measure of how the company utilizes the sales to generate profits (Neely, 2002). The net margin is given as net income being a percentage of the turnover, and indicates how the company utilizes sales to generate income after tax and costs of goods sold. For MacDonaldââ¬â¢s, the ratio is given as: = $5,503,100,000/$27,006,000,000 = 0.203. This indicates that the company does not fully utilize its turnover as a means of generating profits, since the net margin is very low. 7. Current ratio The last two ratios that are used to measure a firmââ¬â¢s performance are the quick and current ratios, which are used to indicate how much of the company is able to cover liabilities (Neely, 2002). The current ratio is given as a division of the current assets and the current liabilities, which for MacDonaldââ¬â¢s is given as: = Current Assets / Current Liabilities = $4,403,000,000/ $3,509,200,000 = 1.254 This ratio indicates that the company has more current assets than liabilities, which means that it can cover current liabilities as they fall due. 8. Quick ratio The quick ratio is given as the current ratio but without the inventory in the current assets. The inventory is removed as a measure of determining the most liquid current assets, since the inventory would require some time before it is disposed. = (Current Assets ââ¬â Inventory)/ Current Liabilities = ($4,403,000,000-116,800,000)/ $3,509,200,000 = 1.2214 The above ratio analyses indicate that MacDonaldââ¬â¢s corporation is performing well in terms of the ratios analyzed. The company is profitable and the investment ratios indicate that the assets are well leveraged against the debts and equity. References Neely, A. (2002).
