Firstly, after the father of the Hamlet passed away, he remained fatherless and suffered great depression. In addition, Hamlet is a gloomier and battles the fact between immortality and mortality (DiBattista 70). He is thinking of suicide when he remembers his fathers because he believes he has no reason to live anymore in his absence. It is symbolic in that he wears black cloth as the indication of life holding no meaning and the only thing is to kill himself. This could happen as a revenge of his mother Gertrude and his Uncle Claudius marriage after his fathers death. This marriage betrayed Hamlet because he wanted her mother to remain faithful to his father and not look for the relationship after the death of his father. Hamlet began to grow mad when he found the ghost of his father, the late king of Denmark who involved him the cause of his fathers death. He was sad to realize his father was murdered by his uncle Claudius the new king. The Ghost insisted to the hamlet that he sho uld take avenge for his father. Hamlet developed the negative attitude which causes tragic plot. In his mind, the only sole idea was to take revenge on his uncle Claudius. Claudius refused to mix in with the family and he failed to anticipate that his uncle Claudius was his new father and the king of the Denmark (DiBattista 90). His feelings against his uncle can be proved as I quote, O villain, villain, smiling, dammed villain! My tables!-Meet it is I set it down! That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain. At least Im sure it may be so in Denmark. So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word. This quote can be traced to Act one scene 5 lines 107-111. The quote is enough evidence that Hamlet has nothing in mind than revenge for his father who was murdered by his uncle to marry her mother. Hamlet was just fulfilled with the wishes of the ghost which was to take revenge for his fathers death (Shakespeare 105). When Claudius was praying, Hamlet had the chance for taking the revenge and hamlets religion is incorporat ed in the play where he doesnt want his uncle to go to heaven when his father is in the hell. Hamlet got enraged with betrayal and madness for his uncle who takes away his fathers life wanting to take the position as king and take advantage of marrying Gertrude her mother. As Hamlet was totally driven to take revenge on his uncle Claudius, Prince Fortinbras of Norway, wanted to take revenge on Denmark, therefore, Claudius was to be attacked from two perspectives. Prince Fortinbras of Norway also had same problems facing Hamlet because his father had passed away too. The son of Polonius, Laertes faces the need to perform revenge upon the Hamlet. The death of the Laertes father caused his desire to revenge on Hamlet who had mistakenly killed Polonius thinking that he is Claudius (Shakespeare 120). In real sense Hamlet actions to kill Polonius was unintentional but when Laertes discovered the death of his father he was only after vengeance. Laertes feelings of his fathers death can be quoted, How come the dead? Ill not be juggled with: To hell, allegiance! Vows, to the blackest devil! Conscience and grace, to the profoundest pit! Steam Engine The steam engine was an engine powered by steam. It provided an important source of power independently. The steam engine played a major role in manufacturing and transportation during the Industrial Revolution. The challenge of improving the steam engine was the beginning of the science of thermodynamics. The steam engine was a very important invention. ?Steam can be made at any time simply by boiling water, so it is more dependable than wind or water energy? (Norbeck 34-36). The heating and cooling of steam in cylinder causes pistons to move up and down. The simplest of a steam engine is used as a boiler. This was a common household heating system. The efficiency of the steam engine was very low; there fore they were later replaced by steam turbines. The first piston engine was invented in 1690 by a French inventor named Denis Papin and was used for pumping water. ?Why not find a way to use heat energy? (Garrat 12). It had a single cylinder that operated as a boiler; a small amount of water was added and heated to form steam. The steam raised the piston in the cylinder, after it was raised the heat was removed, the steam condensed and the air pressure on the upper side forced the piston down. In 1705 Thomas Newcomen invented the first practical steam engine. Steam operates the engine by a slide directing steam from on one side of the piston to the other. As the piston moves, the piston rod turns the flywheel half a turn. The steam engine doesn't create power, I t uses steam to change heat energy released by burning fuel into mechanical energy. Steam engines are considered to be external combustion engine because, the fuel is burned outside of the cylinders. An example of internal combustion engine is an automobile. The power is provided by the rapid burning of gasoline inside the cylinders, which is ignited by the spark plug. The explosion inside the cylinder wall causes the pistion to go down and turning a shaft. Thomas Newcomen invented the first steam engine in 1705 although it wasn't very efficient; it was used for pumping water for coal mines. James Watt improved Newcomen's engine in the 1760's. He produced the first type of double acting engine. ?One after another hand operations were replaced by machines? (Lipkin). In a compound engine, steam in high pressure is used in one cylinder and then, after it has expanded and lessened in pressure, it is piped to another cylinder, in which it expands further. The first compound engine used a two-cylinder type but later other types of compound engines used triple and even quadruple cylinders. The advantage of compounding two or more cylinders is that less energy is lost in heating the cylinder walls, as a result, the engine is more efficient. Further improvements to the steam engine lead to the uniflow engine. The piston itself is a valve, and the cylinder remains at a constant temperature while operating. In the uniflow engine steam moves in only one direction, it has two inlet ports and one outlet port. This was a large engine, and was used mainly in big operations; it also was a very expensive engine compared to other engines. This type of engine was a very efficient use of high-pressure steam. Steam turbines produce a rotary motion; it works the same way as a water turbine, except its energy comes from expanding steam. It turns a set of main rotating blades on a wheel. Steam turbines rotate very fast and have no vibrations, unlike the back and forth motion of pistons. Steam engines work great in steam ships, and electric power plants. The flywheel turns at the end of the piston shaft. It was made of heavy metal cast-iron, so it helped eliminate power surges to the generator and, also provides a uniform flow of power. This is an example of the sheer irony aggravated by subtle ignorance which penetrates all corners of the world today. The turning of a blind eye on the real underlying reasons behind apparently benevolent things comprise the entirety of the central story of the article, and this flaw can be easily translated into more understandable word, and one of t hose words is hypocrisy, hypocrisy both of the governments and of the peoples. It is as if globalization does not work the way mankind had envisioned it a century ago. This is so because of the implications of the utter ambitions of nations and the world’s populace to make the world a smaller place, a global community where all differences of people can be changed; but was exacerbated because of the miscalculation of the probable consequences and the hastening of the process. The larger issue is the backpedaling progress of the world as a result of the decline in morality and the simultaneous plunging of regard for the essence of life. If only mankind had anticipated the maladies of today, then technology, capitalism, politics and economics would not be as advanced to the extent that nowadays they create chaos more than they inject goodwill and benevolence; but the opposite had already occurred. If only man had not been so blessed with so much genius then life today is modern but not that complicated. And upon this comes the issue of the nature of man; in spite of his genius, there still are people who are blessed with the eerie ability to propagate evil and make blossom the ills of the world. Lest man has forgotten, great responsibility comes with great power, and by that adage, it need not be disputed that man carries the sole responsibility for the implications of his creations. If only man was innately good, then these problems would not have risen. B ut that is the main irresolvable malady: the enemy of man is himself and the bitterest adversaries of his morality are his greed and his insatiability, all the facets of amorality. If this can not be evaded, the world indeed is a giant satanic mill, so to speak. Unless man sees even at least the tip of the tail of his adversary, which is the evil side of himself, this misfortune in which the world is immersed would go on perpetually and be only aggravated by the further advancement of the quality of human life. One of the insinuations of Greider’s in one of his transcribed cases is the global boycott of a particular venture (Greider 334). I Have a Dream Speech of Heart: a personal response to â€Å"I Have a Dream†. America was built by the people who were searching for freedom and equality; they met in a new land and started to build it as a land of freedom. Ironically, over 100 years after the Independence Day of America, freedom and equality were still unattainable luxury for many people, especially people from different races than white. Non-white Americans had to suffer through racial injustice and discrimination. One of the greatest activists who fought against those inequalities was Martin Luther King Jr. In his momentous speech, â€Å"I have a dream†, King called for racial equality and the end of discrimination. The speech consolidates my belief that people from different races have the right to be treated equally. It also reminds me how hard it was to gain freedom and justice, and encourages me to stand up and make dreams come true. With allusions invoked from widely respected sources as Bible, the United States Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the United States Constitution, King described how disappointed his fellow blacks were when the government broke their promises by giving his fellow a â€Å"bad check†. The blacks suffered numerous inequalities; they had to drink â€Å"from the cup of the bitterness and hatred†. The inequality was not even covered up; there were buildings with â€Å"For Whites Only† signs including the voting places. But King still believed in justice, believed in his â€Å"dream†: â€Å"we are free at last†. He was not dreaming for African American only, he dreamed for a world of equality, a world where people from different races are treated equally. The American government also contributed to disappoint their black citizens by breaking their promises, which also disappoints me. After the declaration of the Emancipation Proclamation, the blacks expected that the Government would do what they promised: providing the â€Å"unalienable Rights† of â€Å"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness†. But then, the Government exposed their unreliability giving to their black brothers a â€Å"bad check†, they left their citizens â€Å"lives on a lonely island of poverty†. In my opinion, Government is the organization that supposed to archive what it promised but in this situation, they lured African Americans to join their army with the promise of freedom and wealthy then leave them with poverty after the war. I could barely hold my anger when I know that the American government had treated non-white Americans as they were not official Americans. I feel so depressed when I listen to the first part of Kings speech about the unfairness that the blacks had to struggle with before they gained their civil rights. â€Å"Five score years† after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the African-Americans still were segregated. Although they were considered American citizens on paper, they were not treated as such. Despite the fact that there was no longer slavery, blacks were still treated as inferior; they were not allowed to vote, they were not allowed to go to places specifically designated as â€Å"For White Only†, and they were even absurdly prohibited from sitting at the front rows on buses. I cannot accept the way that some Americans treated their black brothers and sisters back then, it was racism. It is so bad knowing that black people were treated as even lower than the lowest class in American society. I am impressed and encouraged by Kings strong belief in justice and his disregard for his situation. King said â€Å"we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt†, â€Å"we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal†. They did not just dream, they were ready to fight for what they believed, King described their willing by this say â€Å"to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day†. Those quotes emphasize that despite all the unfairness that they had to suffer through, the bad treatments from their white brothers and the lies from their government, they still believed in justice and wanted to â€Å"make justice a reality†. I admire the blacks; they kept their belief and fought for it no matter what obstacle they might encounter. The speech alarms me that believing and doing must go together in order to archive a goal. Another detail that makes me admire King is that he had led his fellows on a peaceful-war. He suggested that his followers should not use â€Å"physical violence† in their battle because he understood that he was fighting for peace and peace cannot be created by hurting the others. And he also said â€Å"we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force†. Although he was bursting to gain freedom and racial equality for his race, he tried his best to avoid any physical conflict. I am inspired by the dream of King, a world of equality, brotherhood and freedom. In that world, everyone can â€Å"be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood† no matter what color they are, no matter where they are from. People will erase all of the bad memory of slavery and injustice, they will not think about themselves as superior or inferior. In that world, people will be treated equally and â€Å"not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character†. There will be no barriers between religions and races â€Å"black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands†. The world in Kings dream inspires me with its beauty, there is no such thing more beautiful than an equal, happy and peaceful world. Through the speech, I was touched by the great love of King for his nation. That love was first showed in his care for his fellow blacks, an indispensable part of America. Besides that, he had implied his patriotism through his speech â€Å"this nation will rise up†, he wanted to â€Å"transform†¦ our nation in to a beautiful symphony of brotherhood†. He does not just love and care about his followers but also care about and love his white bothers â€Å"Their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom†. It is a great love of a patriot for his country and its citizens. In my opinion, King was willing to fight for his country, which is what makes him unforgettable in hearts of Americans. The speech was delivered from the heart of a man who was willing to exchange anything he had for freedom and civil right for his country. His persistence has inspired me; it makes me want to stand up for my dreams and my rights. It also makes me appreciate the freedom that I have because I know to create it; many people had sacrificed even their lives. Kings works have been continued by many activists, he would love it if he could see that.

Their business strategy is to provide well-known name brands at an everyday low price. Wal-Mart has a wide range of products offered. They offer everything from electronics, movies, books, toys, games, gardening supplies, home supplies, photo development, gifts, jewelry, and at some locations even automobile, optometry, and grocery shopping centers. In operating its network of retail stores Wal-Mart pushes their output to the general public. Wal-Mart focuses their competitive priorities on bringing the customer the lowest prices by selling in volume. The vast size and selection essentially guarantees that the store will have what the customer wants in stock and at a cheaper price than competitors. This strategy allows them to outsell their competition. In order to facilitate the achievement of their goals Wal-Mart has designed their layout to accommodate a large number of shoppers at the same time. They build expansive stores with wide aisles so that many people can feel comfortable shopping at the same time. Wal-Mart has taken the initiative to build stores in countless rural towns and smaller cities. They have increased their market share and have gained a reputable name by doing so. Good Country People Essay

In Flannery O’Connor’s short story â€Å"Good Country People,† Hulga’s arrogance, bitterness, and rebelliousness contribute to her inability to get along with others. Her superior attitude and atheist bent combine to make Hulga a person with few redeeming qualities but an easy target for deception disguised behind a simple mind. It is Hulga’s arrogance towards other less educated than she, in the end, which prevents her from seeing through the fraud of a dishonest man. Hulga’s arrogance is displayed from the beginning of â€Å"Good Country People†. Her mother’s tenant family, the Freemans, have a pair of daughters. Although Glynese and Carramae are â€Å"two of the nicest girls she knew† (page 165) according to Mrs. Hopewell, Hulga refers them to by the derogatory nicknames of Glycerin and Caramel since she clearly thinks herself intellectually superior. Hulga has a doctorate degree from a university and often reminds her mother that were it not been for her heart problems â€Å"she would be far from these red hills and good country people† (page 168) which she considers far beneath her. In fact, Hulga wants nothing to do with her humble surroundings, declaring that she doesn’t like animals or things in nature or even young men, who blatantly display their general stupidity. O’Connor sets up this description of Hulga to foreshadow the character’s reaction when she meets Manley Pointer and â€Å"thinks of it as a great joke† (page 173) upon agreeing to meet him for a picnic. Mrs. Hopewell’s physical description of her daughter as â€Å"constant outrage†¦obliterated every expression from her face† (page 166) clearly demonstrates the effect of Hulga’s bitter attitude and she constantly reminds the girl her face would be much more attractive with a smile. While her mother feels obligated to care for the girl after the unfortunate accident which took her leg, Hulga has rescinded her belief in God and does not allow Mrs. Hopewell to keep a bible in the parlor. She is unrepentant and unrelenting in her bitterness. Hulga has lost so much of her life to this quality and the threat of her medical condition that she feels compelled to lie to Manley Pointer about her age, telling him she is 17 instead of the 32 years she’s actually lived. Hulga is rebellious against the society of which she disapproves as well as her own mother. She looks down on Mrs. Hopewell and her desire to find â€Å"good country people† (page 166) with which to associate. Impressed to walk the fields with her mother, Hulga manages to make it as uncomfortable as possible with â€Å"remarks†¦so ugly and her face so glum†. Hulga smugly responds that that she is merely being herself and this is what her mother gets for asking her to come along. Hulga feels triumphant in legally changing her name into one so ugly that â€Å"her mother had not been able to turn her dust into Joy† (page 167). She continues to rebel against convention, eagerly accompanying Manley Pointer for a rare opportunity to speak with him regarding what she feels are philosophical subjects. Of course it is this rebelliousness that allows him to take advantage of her. Hulga and her mean spirit, arrogance, bitterness and rebelliousness are the perfect combination to be brought down by a simple con man who need do nothing more than show a bit of interest in the reclusive girl. Through O’Connor’s characterization the author retells the moral of the fabled tortoise and hare and reminds the reader of the pitfalls of arrogance.

Brenda, a former socialite, is completely and utterly bored with her monotonous relationship, and completely and utterly bored with her equally monotonous husband, and this is best conveyed in Waughs depiction of the couples breakfast routine. Waugh seems to have the ambition of emphasizing his skepticism for relationships, and does so by writing the sad tale of Tony and Brenda Last. Waugh creates a sense of monotony easily and skillfully. For example, Only four of the six churches were visible that morning. This is a perfect example of how boring Tonys character really is. One of his daily highlights is to see church spires out of Brendas window. Everyday. The author really wants to convey to the audience that here is a man who is very much stuck in his ways. He shows no desire for change and adventure, which is exactly what Brenda desires. When Tony responds to an invitation to a party with Not on her life! Brenda replies with, No, I guessed not. She is resigned to putting up with her dull life, and seems, at first at the very least, quite self-sacrificial and to be a considerate wife. However, it is also evident that she shows little affection for Tony. When he enters the bedroom in which they are taking their breakfast, she simply greets him with kiss, which is quite possibly the most dispassionate way of asking for a kiss ever. Brenda kisses by turning her lips away and rubbing against his cheek like a cat. It was a way she had. The author truly conveys a distinct lack of passion or genuine affection, Brenda acted out if habit, not out of self will. He also didnt receive a real kiss, showing their relationship was missing any fire, leading the reader to doubt Brendas true feelings for Tony. Waugh stresses the differences between Tony and Brenda with subtlety, she had insisted on a modern bed. Their relationship is presented in a very unsympathetic manner, and also as the stereo-type of an upper class relationship during the era, thus foreshadowing the end of the relationship. Forster has also shown the effects that being a member of the upper -class on his characters. Cecil endeavors to remove Lucy of the Honeychurch taint . Forster constantly forewarns the demise of Lucy and Cecils relationship, as does Waugh. Lucy has refused Cecils offer or marriage three times before he finally accepts, showing her severe reluctance. The engagement is a sham, a front for Lucys relationship with George, much like Brendas marriage covering her affair with John Beaver. Waugh seems to also hint at the destruction of the couples marriage simply by giving the couple different bedrooms, Morgan le Fay and Guinevere. This shows a strong sense of irony, as Guinevere herself was said to be adulterous, suggesting Brendas impending infidelity. Her treachery is indicated when being referred to as like a mermaid, a Nereid emerging from fathomless depths of clear water. Waugh also uses techniques such as describing Brenda and Tony as two separate people, rather than a couple. Furthermore, this seems to be a new concept in the Hetton manor, breaking family traditions, as Tonys parents were known to be inseperable in Guinevere. This emphasizes the differences between the couple, showing that the marriage was already loveless from the offset. Tonys ignorance of his wifes mounting boredom is how Waugh prevents him as the male naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½f in the novel. Which highlights Waughs reference to Morgan Le Fay with the inability to see what is right before his own eyes. Waugh is particularly good at foreshadowing future events in his novel with possibly suggestive speech. Brenda says to Mr. Beaver at the end of his visit to Hetton next time you come with warns the reader of a future encounter between the pair. This is seems to hint at Brendas imminent adultery and her unfaithful nature. Waugh also uses his description of John Beaver as a means of foreshadowing the relationships demise. He presents Beaver in a highly derogatory light, as a man who is dull and spends his time scrounging off others. He got up late and sat near the telephone most of the day, hoping to be rung up shows that he would rather waste time than pay his own way. Simply the name is an ironic choice, as it doesnt suit his character. Beavers, by nature, are industrious and hard-working animals, and John Beaver is as far removed from his namesake as could be. Waugh shows that he has absolutely no prospects of employment. By portraying him in this way, Waugh depicts to the reader how desperate and lonely Brenda really is, as she will take up any company available. This is further expressed by how quickly she warms to Beaver. At the first hint of Beavers arrival, Brenda suggests that he can go into Galahad, no one who sleeps there ever comes again. However, she soon changes her mind, Next time you co me again you must have a better room I daresay you wont ever come again, people so seldom do. She is charmed, somehow, after spending only a day with him, and is eager to spend more time in his company. This further serves to highlight Tonys naivety and his misguided trust in his wife, which he does throughout the novel. Waugh also hints at Tonys naivety continuously throughout the novel. Tony states that Brenda was heroic with Beaver, to which she replies that she was coping with it, and she enjoyed his company, hinting at their growing intimacy. Waugh begins to refer to Brenda and Beaver as they showing that they are now a couple. The fact that Tony notices none of this further alludes to his naivety. When Brenda sends a telegram to Tony, she finishes with love to you both, which is ironic considering that she is seeing another man behind Tonys back, therefore leading Tony into a false sense of security about his marriage. As the novel progresses, Evelyn Waugh unveils more and more of Brendas true character. The unsavory nature of Beavers character is enhanced throughout the book by dark imagery. His room is gloomy and cluttered and he emerged from the shadows below. It is clear that this is not a character the audience should support. Forster uses similar techniques in his novel to describe Cecil. Forster, unlike Waugh uses physical descriptions his characters rather than use of dialogue. Cecil was medieval, like a gothic statue. Cecil snored on in his darkened room. These are stark contrasts to Forsters description of George, Lucys other love interest. The view was golden, enveloped by light and beauty. George is presented as bright and colorful, and seems to make Lucy come alive, and Forster portrays George accordingly. Waugh also alludes to Brendas infidelity many times throughout the novel. When asked about her doings in London by her husband, Brenda replies that she has been behaving rather badly to tell the truth, and also outright telling Tony that she has been carrying on madly with young men. This shows Tonys lack of understanding, as he sees Brendas confession as a sarcastic comment. It also conveys both Tonys loyalty and his naivety, as he perceives her character as one who would not have such affairs. His trust makes him see his wifes affair as a poor taste joke. Brenda lets out that she doesnt really deserve Tonys kindness, admitting that she has been carrying on anyhow for the week. Waugh makes Brenda make a mockery out of Tony, toying with his emotion. This shows the reader how easily manipulated Tony is, whilst at the same time showing Brendas true nature. She is clever at using her husbands feelings in her favor, making him feel bad when she is in the wrong. This is emphasized when Tony arrives to visit Brenda in London. She makes him feel guilty for arriving unannounced, and claims she is too busy to see him. Im going out darling, you shouldve rung ahead. Tony is so blinded by naivety that he cannot see how strange this behavior is. However, despite not being able to see that his wife is cheating on him, Tony is intuitive to the fact that he is being pushed out of his wifes life. They call me old boy. I know they laugh at me. Waugh creates characters that do not evolve as the novel progresses, allowing you to sympathize with and admire Tony. He is named Tony Last as he is the last in a dying breed of true English gentlemen, and Waugh wants to convey his disgust in the new middle classs abandonment of traditional morals, using satire to portray his sadness at the emergence of a new flapper girl culture. Forster, conversely, uses rounded characters who mature and adapt as A room with a View unfolds. Whereas Waugh wants to show how he doesnt want culture and society, and even people to change, Forster has a more accepting view of this. A room with a view is also lacking in Waughs cynical satire, taking a more romantic view on relationships. Lucy, the central character, eventually ends up with George, her true love, proving that love can overcome many obstacles. However, in a Handful of dust the protagonist is left in the Amazon jungle. It is apparent from the offset that Brenda and Tonys relationship is doomed in the novel A handful of Dust. Waugh makes their differences clear throughout the novel, also making clear his distaste at the relationships within the English Upper-class. Brendas further progression into a relationship with Jock Grant-Menzies, whilst Lucy remains with George, further emphasizes Waugh and Forsters different views, with Waughs satirical sadness contrasting with Forsters acceptance and romanticism. Despite Lucy and Cecils relationship being doomed, she did not act as unscrupulously with George as Brenda with Beaver, and this is the key point of comparison between the two novels. A Room with a View is a tale of love, hope and morality. A handful of Dust is an account of the authors sadness as the demise of conventions in adapting upper-class society.

Honest Iago Essay

Iago is the most unique villain of Shakespeare There has been a lot of controversy about his motives and he has been considered as an incarnation of the devil. At the same time, Iago is one of the most brilliant Shakespearean characters although Shakespeare uses his cunningness only for diabolical purposes. He has can rightly be called an atheist of human nature and a stealthy corrupter of human piety, a fearless disturber of domestic peace and an unbeliever in and denier of anything spiritual. This is interesting to note that all characters in the play, except for Roderigo (to whom he sometimes shows his real face) have a high opinion of Iago and refer to him as â€Å"honest Iago†. He uses this high oestimation of him by these major characters to befool them. The Mutual relationship between Iago and Othello is of trust and reliance on the part of Othello but it is conniving and devious on the part of Iago. Iago has same relationship with Cassio. Cassio is also deceived by the seeming virtue of Iago and actually believes that ensign is a kind-hearted man. But at the same time is a rival to Iago in the royal court. Another facets of his relationship with Othello and Cassio is that he (Iago) lives the part of a blurt outspoken plain fellow who is always prepared to say what he really thinks without caring for the effect it may have on others. Othello is shown as a trustful and thorough in his trust for Iago. Although when Iago starts working on him, he suspects him and asks for evidence, yet from the beginning of the play, he seems to have put entire confidence in the honesty of Iago, who had not been his companions in arms. This confidence is misplaced but it is no sign of stupidity in Othello. He does not have a distinctive fear of him. We find this even before Iago has set a trap for him. Othello fears the monster â€Å"too hideous to be shown† that he discerns about Iago’s thoughts. This manifests a strange relationship based on paradoxical feelings. It is of confidence, trust and fear. But latter events show that Othello’s trust in Iago overpowers the instinctive fear. This happens due to Othello’s non-meditative nature. He does not contemplate over issues and does not weigh their motive and consequences. And this is the thing that helps Iago to get control over Othello. A. C. Bradley rightly says in this regard; The sources of danger in this character are revealed but too clearly by the story. In the first place, Othello’s mind, for all its poetry, is very simple. He is not observant. His nature tends outward. He is quite free from introspection, and is not given to reflection. Emotion excites his imagination, but it confuses and dulls his intellect. On this side he is the very opposite of Hamlet, with whom, however, he shares a great openness and trustfulness of nature. In addition, he has little experience of the corrupt products of civilised life, and is ignorant of European women. (p. 217) Relationship between Iago and Cassio exists and develops on the same lines as that of Othello’s. Cassio has a high opinion of Iago and considers him an unmatched person in Florence but Iago’s opinion of him is prejudiced and biased. Iago dismisses Cassio as a mere theorist and not a practical warrior. In their mutual relationship Cassio’s genuine honesty is contrasted with Iago’s seeming honesty. We are never certain that we understand why Iago commits his evil deeds. Coleridge calls his evilness as â€Å"motiveless malignity† (315) there is no doubt that he is throughout an artist in villainy. There is no mystery in the psychology of Iago and the key to Iago’s motives may lie in the composition of his character. One of the noticeable traits in his character is keen sense of superiority and contempt for others. There also the annoyance of having always to play a part, the enjoyment of the action and the absence of fear. Iago’s sense of superiority has been thwarted and it needs satisfaction. The fullest satisfaction, it could find would, no doubt, be in the consciousness to take revenge from those who are so successful and popular. In addition to his strong desire to satisfy his sense of power, there are also certain other forces which drive him on. One of these is a pleasure in action very difficult and perilous. This action and pleasure lends him artistry in the art of being spiteful against other. All these characteristics if nature and his disposition play a part in making him a great villain of Shakespeare. These motives appear and disappear in the most extraordinary manner. Resentment as Cassio’s appointment is expressed in the first conversation with Roderigo, and from that moment is never once mentioned again in the whole play. Hatred of Othello is expressed in the first act only. Desire to get Cassio’s place scarcely appears after the first soliloquy, and when it is gratified Iago does not refer to it by a single word. The suspicion’s of Cassio’s intrigues with Emilia emerges suddenly as an afterthought. Iago’s love of Desdemona is alluded to in the second soliloquy; there is not the faintest trace of it in word or deed either before or after. The mention of jealousy of Othello is followed by declarations that Othello is infatuated about Desdemona and is of a constant nature, and during Othello’s suffering Iago never shows a sign of the idea that he is now paying his rival in his own coin. In the second soliloquy he declares that he quite believes Cassio t0o be in love with Desdemona; it is obvious that he believes no such thing, for he never alludes to the idea again, and within a few hours, he describes Cassio as an honest fool. All these motives have strange paradoxical characteristics in them but it could not have been coincidence that Shakespeare has attributed so many motives to Iago. All these motives manifest the intricate nature of Iago’s characters and disposition. In addition to a man of action, Iago also seems to be something of an artist who takes delight in undertaking a complicated task in a meticulous manner. The action he starts and works out is intricate. We get an impression that at some stage, the action Iago initiates remain no longer within his control and power but rather becomes his master. With the rising healthcare costs and decrease in reimbursement for care provided, organizations must look for ways of cost containment to maintain viability for the future. Fabre (2005) noted that administrators are struggling to maintain financial stability and retain competent nurses during these difficult financial times. Organizations are being evaluated and reimbursed based on their patient care outcomes; as such the nurse’s role is critical in helping to identify potential safety risks to patients and the prevention of medical errors. As hospitals have responded to financial pressure from Medicare, managed care , and other private payers, registered nurses have become increasingly dissatisfied with the working conditions in hospitals† (Fabre, 2005, p. 20). One of the many challenges in healthcare today, is the need for organizations to recognize and facilitate the improvement of the work environment. The need for competent, qualified nurses in any organization is i mperative for providing safe, quality care to the clients. For this reason the critical role that nurses have in providing patient safety should not be underestimated. The Institute of Medicine (2004) reported â€Å" research is now beginning to document what physicians, patients, other healthcare providers, and nurses themselves have long known: how well we are cared for by nurses affects our health, and sometimes can be a matter of life or death† (p. 2). The importance of a healthy work environment has been recognized as a key component in maximizing organizational performance, contributing to a decrease in the nursing shortage within an organization and is vital in providing quality care to the clients they serve. The growing concern for the nursing shortage continues to be a major issue affecting the profession and attention is being given to the stressful nature of the work environment. Several national surveys were completed in 2002 and 2004, identifying reasons for the ongoing nursing shortage, one of the major concerns centered on the work environment (Florida Center of Nursing, 2006). Organizations are looking at ways of restructuring the work environment, enabling staff nurses the opportunity to participate in decisions that impact their ability to practice. McDonald, Tullai-McGuinness, Madigan, and Shively (2010) remarked that workplaces that have a supportive work environment have noted success in recruitment and retention of their work force, citing an increase in job satisfaction and improved patient outcomes. With nurses making up the largest percentage of professionals working in a hospital setting, organizations now recognize the importance of the nurses’ role and measures to improve the workplace are being developed. Lowe (2002) noted â€Å" diagnosing the extent of work environment problems in healthcare is the first step in designing strategies to improve the quality of healthcare workplaces† (p. 49). Hospitals looking to improve on the work environment must first have an understanding of the nurses’ perception of their workplace environment. Kramer and Schmalenberg (2008) noted â€Å"the perspective of clinical nurses at the front line as to what constitutes a healthy work environment is essential if interventions to improve practice environments in hospitals are to be implemented† (p. 57). Once an organization is able to identify distinctive characteristics that have an impact on staff and their environment, they are then able to proceed in developing strategies to improve the work culture. All members of the healthcare team, including staff, management, and administrators, must be committed to the development of a healthy work environment as well as sustaining the culture through modeled behavior. Practical techniques to assist in the development of staff friendly cultures are clearly identified, with long term strategies implemented rather than short term fixes, for all members of the organization. To help facilitate and guide organizations, professional groups have designed several programs available for their use in fostering a healthy work environment (Florida Center of Nursing, 2006). The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ACNN) sponsors the Magnet Recognition Program, which focuses on the development of nursing practices and evaluates the environment where nursing is practiced. This program is well recognized by organizations throughout the country, as the Magnet Journey and is considered to be one of the highest achievements that organizations can obtain (Broom, & Tilbury, 2007). Organizations that strive to achieve the Magnet designation, acknowledge the link between a healthy work environment and the development of an organization of nursing excellence. Hospitals utilizing the Magnet concept demonstrate the following characteristics; (a) authentic leadership, (b) skilled communication, (c) effective decision making, (d) quality patient care processes, (e) collaboration and teamwork among all healthcare workers, (f) professional growth and accountability, (g) clinically competent staff and (h) adequate staffing levels (Shirey, 2006). All the above components are essential and linked to the effectiveness of a quality work culture. An online survey of clinical nurses, conducted by the AACN, were asked to identify factors that had an impact on their satisfaction with nursing as well as potential reasons that might cause them to leave the profession ( Ulrich et al. , 2006). Leadership style was identified as a key component affecting nurses’ satisfaction with their job. Nursing leadership is a crucial element to the work environment of nurses, as it is the leaders who can bring about positive changes to the environment (Florida Center of Nursing, 2006). The importance of effective leadership from all levels of management in any organization is essential in developing and promoting collaboration with their employees. A manager’s ability to foster leadership growth, and recognize the importance and expertise of the nursing staff will have a major advantage in retention of competent nurses in their units. In essence, leaders who can motivate and provide opportunities for their staff, and demonstrate a high level of role model behavior, have higher levels of staff participation and commitment to the organization. Authentic leadership is characterized as one that establishes relationships which are based on trust, respect, and can be considered genuine and believable (Shirey, 2006). Leaders that demonstrate excellent management styles are participatory, coaching and mentoring, they encourage and value staff members and support staff involvement in decision making that has an impact on their work environment (Tomey, 2008). The importance of effective leadership, with staff and management working together, is noted by their ability to create a shared vision for the organization through collaboration and continuous improvement of the work environment. Shirey (2006) noted â€Å"authentic leadership was described as the glue needed to hold together a healthy work environment† (p. 256). Another influential factor in the workplace is skilled communication among all levels of the healthcare team. Key components when utilizing one’s communication skills include verbal and nonverbal interactions and enhanced listening skills, all are vital in ensuring effective communication. Because communication happens continuously in the workplace between employees, managers and customers, it plays a vital role in the development of healthy relationships. Fabre (2005) noted that nursing staff expect sincerity, trust and good communication from all levels of leadership within the organization. Communicating openly and honestly allows for individuals to deal with one another in a respectful manner, build trust and have an appreciation for each other. A healthy relationship among co-workers enhances the communication process, allowing collaboration and teamwork, which in turn leads to a decrease in medical errors and fosters a safe environment for patient care. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) remarked that the 80% of medication errors and 70% of sentinel events that occurred in delivery of patient care were directly related to ineffective communication among the care providers (Florida Center of Nursing, 2006). Interactions among nurses, physicians, patients and managers, all have a direct impact on the quality of care delivered. In order to provide optimal patient care, it becomes crucial for all members of the healthcare team to communicate effectively with one another. Interpersonal relationships and collaborative teamwork among nurses, physicians and other members of the healthcare team are crucial to the delivery of quality care to the patients (Parsons, & Cornett, 2005). Another important aspect of a healthy work environment is one where nurses are supported and feel empowered to participate in decision making. Ulrich et al. (2006) reported the Institute of Medicine advocates for frontline staff to be involved and entrusted in the decision making and delivery of the patient care provided. When nurses are given the opportunity to participate in clinical and organizational decisions and receive support for their efforts, it fosters personal accountability and autonomy for all staff involved. Empowerment of the nursing staff establishes the groundwork for a positive workplace with collaboration and meaningful communication, enabling professional development and growth within the organization (Parsons, & Cornett, 2005). Organizations that promote staff involvement in the development of policies and procedures, fosters support for the nurses’ ability to use their critical thinking skills in determining what is the best plan of care for their patients. Nurses need to feel safe and secure in their work environment to be effective in utilizing their critical thinking skills. Kouzes (as cited by Fabre, 2005) remarked â€Å"the key to unleashing the organization’s potential to excel is putting that power in the hands of the people who perform the work (p. 7). When staff members are engaged and feel valued as member of the team, a true sense of autonomy is present in their daily care of patients. Fabre (2005) remarked it is extremely important for nurses to be autonomous, allowing them the ability to make decisions about direct patient care in their daily practice. One such method for getting staff members involved is through the use of shared governance committees within their units. Direct care nurses participating on these councils, are involved with decision making regarding positive patient care models as well as nursing satisfaction and retention (Florida Center of Nursing, 2006). Nurses working in positive work environments demonstrate mutual respect for one another, show consistent professional collaboration among all team members and function as high performance team members in their organizations. Vollers, Hill, Roberts, Dambaugh, and Brenner (2009) noted â€Å"nurses affect patients’ outcomes by their direct actions and their influence over the actions of other† (p. 24). It becomes easier for employees to recognize and accept the need for change, problem solve and decrease stress in their workplace. Another important aspect relating to nursing satisfaction is the importance of professional development. Organizations that are recognized for their high standard of patient care acknowledge the importance of their nursing staff and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth. Successful organizations offer various learning avenues for their employees. Emphasis is placed on orientation for new staff members, in-service education, continuing education as well as formal education and career development (Tomey, 2008). Nurses recognize that continuing education and competency go hand and hand and is imperative for professional development as well as patient safety. Individuals, who are given the opportunity to grow and develop their skills and abilities within an organization, will be happier and more productive at work. Another avenue of development for nursing is certification in their specialty. A certified nurse provides a level of expertise at the bedside when caring for his/her patients. Ulrich et al. (2006) noted the correlation between certified nurses and improved patient care; nurses were able to quickly identify the problem and intervene appropriately to the issue at hand. Nurses who embrace the idea of lifelong learning are able to adjust to the ever changing needs in healthcare and are much more satisfied in their job roles. Personal and professional growth is valued in organizations, where managers are committed to providing time and resources for staff learning and educational opportunities (Institute of Medicine, 2004). A shift in management thinking, from controlling to guiding staff, becomes an important step for staff development which in turn improves quality of nursing care. A common concern that nurses have with their current work environment is one of inadequate staffing levels. Hospitals that employ the concepts of magnet empower their nurses to make decisions about appropriate staffing levels. Management and staff nurses work together to build safe staffing strategies to meet the needs of the individual units. This collaboration between staff and management, builds trust, empowers the nursing staff and enables nurses to feel they have personal accountability for the success of their organization (Fabre, 2005). Organizations have struggled with trying to determine the number of nurses needed to provide safe, quality patient care and do so in a cost effective manner. The Institute of Medicine (2004) remarked that experts have recognized that healthcare organizations need to be aware, that overemphasis on efficiency and productivity may have a negative impact on patient safety. With the added stress of providing care for sicker patients with fewer nurses at the bedside, less time is available for nurses to meet all the physical, mental and psychosocial needs of the patients. Morgan and Lynn (2009) remarked â€Å"being pressed for time and energy, nurses describe their work in terms of survival; the luxuries of meaningful care interactions with patients are forgone† (p. 07). Often nurses feel they have time to only perform the minimum amount of basic care; and patient education, basic comforting and advocating for the patient is omitted. The lack of resources in staffing as well as a poor working environment is extremely dissatisfying to the nursing staff and impacts patient outcomes. â€Å"Research indicates that nurse staffing has a defin ite and measurable impact on patient outcomes, medical errors, length of stay, nurse turnover, and organizational outcomes† (Florida Center of Nursing, 2006, p. 5). There is no single action that guarantees a foolproof solution to patient safety during one’s hospitalization, but consideration of staffing levels has played a critical role in providing that safe care. Buchan and Aiken (2008) noted an association between higher nurse staffing ratios and a decrease in medical complications and patient mortality. Staff nurses recognize high risk situations and patient safety concerns, when understaffed they are often times unable to prevent these catastrophic incidents. Safety is a patient’s right and they deserve the nurse’s best efforts. Fabre (2005) noted that the success of nurses as well the healthcare organization is dependent on a positive healthy work environment. Patient safety needs to be the most important goal for any organization. Culture does matters and a healthy work environment makes the difference in an organization’s performance. The importance of promoting health, through the use of wellness programs, as well as prevention of illness for employees in an organization should not be overlooked. Staff should be supported and encouraged to participate in their own health management. Burton (2008) remarked â€Å"it is intuitively obvious that unhealthy, stressed employees will cost a company something in terms of absenteeism and decreased productivity† (p. 3). A positive work environment fosters healthy lifestyles, behaviors and enables individuals to develop coping skills to deal with stress on a daily basis. The financial benefits versus the cost of creating a healthy work environment can be cost neutral. Many of the magnet concepts, if developed in the workplace, are done with no direct costs to the hospitals. Changes in leadership styles, supportive and respectful behavior towards staff and empowering nurses in the decision making does not cost the organization money (Burton, 2008). All these factors will have a significant impact on the work environment; improving the physical and mental wellbeing of staff members. Patients trust and recommend hospitals because of the nursing care they receive. Fabre (2005) noted an important reminder to hospitals; patients tell their family, friends and neighbors about the care, good or bad, they received while a patient in their organization. Excellent patient care coupled with patient satisfaction is what attracts people to an organization. Healthcare organizations that demonstrate and promote healthy work environments will become the employer of choice in their communities. Burton (2008) noted that administrators of an organization cannot argue the fact that their reputation is extremely important in the community in relation to the success of their facility. Patients do notice the difference and when hospitals are able to recruit and retain the best nurses in the community; this nursing excellence has the ability to drive the success of the organization. Whether an organization chooses to seek Magnet designation or not, the concepts can still be utilized in any organization towards the development of a healthy work environment. It is important that organizations recognize the need for development of strategies that foster a healthy work environment, where staff are valued and acknowledged for their contributions and have a desire to work in their facilities. The association between a healthy work environment and the health and wellbeing of the nursing staff correlates to the impact on the quality of care provided to the patients they serve. It is evident that the continuity of patient care, recruitment and retention of competent nursing staff and organizational viability are all greatly impacted by the nurses’ work environment. Maintaining a healthy workplace remains a challenge in healthcare and must be seen as an ongoing process. Healthcare organizations that are able to develop and sustain quality workplaces will be able to meet the demands of healthcare in the future by retaining competent nursing staff and meeting the health needs of their communities. .
